By Lizzie Johnson and Kamila Hrabchuk

IZYUM, Ukraine — Newly 16, she likes to walk alone, hands shoved in pockets, music loud in her ears, for mile after mile.

If Kate Kobets walks far enough, she can escape into her own world. It is a place where her childhood hasn’t been destroyed — her home loud with war, her soldier stepfather locked away as a Russian prisoner of war, she and her mom confined to a bomb shelter for much of the year after she turned 14.

She is part of a generation of Ukrainian teenagers living through a conflict entering its third year with no end in sight. Raised during a pandemic — then through gunfire and bloodshed — Kate, like many of her peers, is unsure what it means for her future. She knows she is luckier than some of her friends — who have lost their homes or even their lives. Still, it is difficult to make sense of it all.

Kate feels frozen, she said in interviews during three days of visits to her home, her life suspended when Russia invaded her country in February 2022, then overtook her city a month later — a brutal occupation that lasted half a year. Kate’s mom didn’t want to split their family up. By the time they decided to evacuate, it was too late.

Kate was there as 80 percent of Izyum was razed, as more than 1,000 of her neighbors were killed. She was there when the city — an important transportation hub in eastern Ukraine with a preinvasion population of about 45,000 — was liberated in September 2022.

Her classes are still online. Her friends are displaced. Her crush is in a different country. Her beloved woods contain mines and at least one mass grave. Still, she thought that 16 would be different — more freedom, more maturity. But her birthday came and went on Dec. 4, and now, it is just more of the same.

“I thought, ‘Wow, cool. I will be so grown up,’” Kate said. “And I feel like a 10-year-old child.”

Nearly every day, she walks — remembering what her life was, escaping what it has become — until her legs ache and her mind goes blank.

Remembering

Strolling Izyum’s downtown, Kate walked through her memories.

The city changed, but the streets stayed the same, and she finds comfort in them. It was late December, and she walked with slow, sure steps — as if she could go unseen — in a donated women’s parka she has yet to grow into. Red hair poked from beneath her beanie, her cheeks a sandstorm of light freckles.

She stopped at each crosswalk — looking back and forth, back and forth — as military vehicles roared by, exhaling black smoke.

She walked by her old school, the red and white brick crumpled, the roof open to the sky. In the winter, Kate remembered, students used to pour an ice rink out front. Once, a girl slipped and broke her arm — back then, big news.

“It seems as if I will wake up in the morning … and everything will be as before,” Kate said.

Past the schoolyard, she cut through the city’s main park — shorn of trees, the fountain at its center dark. This was where her parents met and fell in love at 19. They were just three years older than she is now, but Kate could not yet imagine a love like that. Her parents divorced when she was 7 — what she thought then would be her hardest year.

Kate used to spend a lot of time at the park. Picnicking on the grass with Kira and Nastya in the summer — cold lemonade, mushroom sandwiches. Borrowing Olya’s skates to zip around the main square, rolling so fast it felt like she was flying.

Now, only Kira is left. “Promise always that we will be together,” she wrote in Kate’s birthday card that month, stamping her hand in red paint on the front.

With the card, she gifted Kate a friendship bracelet with beads of pastel shells.

Kate walked down a long street to the Donets River. The girls once celebrated the end of summer here, diving into the cool water, their clothes dripping wet. At Nastya’s house, they used a hair dryer on Kate’s outfit to hide the evidence. Her mother — who had forbidden Kate to swim — never found out.

That was before Nastya moved to Russia with her family.

Kate walked to the next road, then stopped abruptly, her face like another collapsed building.

Olya — killed in a shelling at 14 — once lived down there.

Tivat airport is located right next to the city of Tivat, 8 km (5 miles) from the center of Kotor and 20 km (12 miles) northwest of Budva, one of the most popular tourist destinations on the eastern Adriatic coast. The airport’s single runway ends just 88 m (289 ft) from the Bay of Kotor coastline.

Tivat Airport has been classified 4D by ICAO airspace class D and is notable for its difficult approach and landing procedures. Landing in Tivat is considered challenging due to the rugged terrain surrounding the valley where the airport is located and the strong crosswinds prevailing. The runway 32 approach requires a descent into the Tivatsko polje valley and a 20° turn for runway alignment just before landing. The Runway 14 approach is even more difficult due to the flat-to-land maneuvering performed in the dramatic landscape surrounding the Bay of Kotor. It is known among pilots as the Kai Tak of Europe due to its difficult approach and landing procedures and is also comparable to Madeira Airport. Porto Montenegro luxury marina.[citation needed] The airport is often visited by aircraft lookouts, as the runway end is easily accessible and offers unobstructed views of takeoffs and landings against a mountain backdrop.

Among the year-round services from the airport are Belgrade and Moscow; however, with the start of seasonal and charter flights, more than 80% of the traffic is concentrated in the summer period. With the opening of Porto Montenegro and the introduction of other high-end tourism services, the airport is increasingly catering to business jets.

The Adriatic Highway (E65/E80) passes right next to the passenger terminal, providing easy access to the airport from the entire northern part of the Montenegrin coast.

Montenegro, country located in the west-central Balkans at the southern end of the Dinaric Alps. It is bounded by the Adriatic Sea and Croatia (southwest), Bosnia and Herzegovina (northwest), Serbia (northeast), Kosovo (east), and Albania (southeast).

Montenegro’s administrative capital is Podgorica, though its cultural centre is the historical capital and older city of Cetinje. For much of the 20th century Montenegro was a part of Yugoslavia, and from 2003 to 2006 it was a component of the federated union of Serbia and Montenegro.

Land

The country’s names—both Montenegro (from Venetian Italian) and Crna Gora—denote “Black Mountain,” in reference to Mount Lovćen (5,738 feet [1,749 metres]), its historical centre near the Adriatic Sea and its stronghold in the centuries of struggle with the Turks. Alone among the Balkan states, Montenegro was never subjugated. The old heartland of Montenegro, in the southwest, is mainly a karstic region of arid hills, with some cultivable areas—e.g., around Cetinje and in the Zeta valley. The eastern districts, which include part of the Dinaric Alps (Mount Durmitor), are more fertile and have large forests and grassy uplands. The drainage system of Montenegro flows in two opposite directions. The Piva, Tara, and Lim rivers follow northerly courses, the Morača and Zeta rivers southerly ones.

Relief

The terrain of Montenegro ranges from high mountains along its borders with Kosovo and Albania, through a segment of the Karst region of the western Balkan Peninsula, to a narrow coastal plain that is only 1 to 4 miles (2 to 6 km) wide. The coastal plain disappears completely in the north, where Mount Lovćen and other peaks rise abruptly from the inlet of the Gulf of Kotor. The coastal region is noted for seismic activity.

Montenegro’s section of the Karst lies generally at an elevation of 3,000 feet (900 metres) above sea level—although some areas rise to 6,000 feet (1,800 metres). The lowest segment is in the valley of the Zeta River, which is at about 1,500 feet (450 metres). The river occupies the centre of Nikšić Polje, a flat-floored, elongated depression typical of karstic regions, as is the predominantly limestone underlying rock, which dissolves to form sinkholes and underground caves.

The high mountains of Montenegro include some of the most rugged terrain in Europe and average more than 7,000 feet (2,000 metres) in elevation. Notable is Bobotov Peak in the Durmitor Mountains, which reaches 8,274 feet (2,522 metres) and is the country’s highest point. The Montenegrin mountains were the most ice-eroded section of the Balkan Peninsula during the last glacial period.

Climate

Montenegro’s lower areas have a Mediterranean climate, with dry summers and mild, rainy winters. Temperature varies greatly with elevation. Podgorica, lying near sea level, is noted for having the warmest July temperatures in the country, averaging 81 °F (27 °C). Cetinje, in the Karst region at an elevation of 2,200 feet (670 metres), has an average temperature that is 10 °F (5 °C) lower. Average January temperatures range from 46 °F (8 °C) at Bar on the southern coast to 27 °F (−3 °C) in the northern mountains.

Montenegro’s mountainous regions receive some of the highest amounts of rainfall in Europe. Annual precipitation at Crkvice, in the Karst above the Gulf of Kotor, is nearly 200 inches (5,100 mm). Like most areas along the Mediterranean Sea, precipitation occurs principally during the cold part of the year, but in the higher mountains a secondary summer maximum is present. Snow cover is rare along the Montenegrin coast, averaging 10 days in karstic polje depressions and increasing to 120 days in the higher mountains.
