COLOMBIA: CARTAGENA

With its famous port, castel and historical works, the Colombian city of Cartagena, located close to Central America, should be high on the list of places to see before they disappear. A key feature of the city, which ranks alongside other Carrabean ports such as Havana, San Juan and Porto Rico, is the important role it played in the Age of Discovery. The city’s port contains the last intact examples of Spanish colonial architecture from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. And just as in Havana, San Juan and Porto Rico, the city’s place on the sea route to the West Indies gives it a unique status. Changes in the global climate pose the biggest threat to the city’s heritage, however, with rising water levels submerging Cartagena’s castle and protective walls inc by inc. (GLOBER)
